Streamer, YouTuber, Influencer, Soloprenuer, Digital Marketer—no matter who you are, if you create content, you’re going to need a video editor. While there are tons of video editors on the market, many require hefty subscription fees and are difficult to use. Oslo, however, is a browser based (nothing to download!) video editor that is simple and easy to use. Today we’ll show you how to edit your first video with Oslo—you’re going to love this intuitive software.
Before we dive into the tutorial, let’s look at some reasons why Oslo is simply the best video editor around:
- Export directly to YouTube. No more worrying about whether your hard drive has enough space!
- Take advantage of a free-to-use sound library with a variety of jingles and transition sounds.
- Optimize video format for YouTube (landscape), TikTok (portrait), or Instagram (square) with one click.
- Easily add teammates or friends to collaborate and give feedback on your video.
- Drag and drop filters, text, transitions and more!
How to Edit Your First Video
Step 1: Upload Your Footage
Oslo offers demo footage for you to play around with if it’s your first time editing a video. Feel free to experiment with Oslo’s various features and when you’re ready, click on “Create New Video” to get started.
After giving your new video a title, click on the plus sign to upload your video footage. Once your video has processed and been added, hover over it with your mouse and click the plus sign to add it to your timeline.
Step 2: Shorten Clips and Move Them Around as Needed
If you want to insert B-roll or any other video clips, you can split your clip by clicking where you want to separate the video on your timeline and then selecting the scissors icon to the left. Click and drag clips you want to reposition. We have a blog post on streamlining your post production workflow if you’re curious about which edits you should do first and why.
Step 3: Add Effects
Now is the time for you to have some fun with your video. To add a transition, click on the plus sign between two of your video clips and choose one from the menu. You can view your transition by dragging the white marker and hitting the play button. The pause button will allow you to start and stop your video from the same point, while hitting the stop button will play your video from the beginning.
To add a song or sound effect, navigate to the sound menu on the left and click the plus sign on your track of choice. From there, you can lower the volume, choose a “fade” effect, and increase or decrease the playback speed. If you want to add your own music, just go back to the media menu where you uploaded your video clips and click on “audio.”
To add text, navigate to the text menu on the left and select your desired font. You can then type your text and change the size, color, opacity, and rotation. Drag it around where you’d like it to appear on screen.
Step 4 (Optional): Enable Collaborations
As mentioned above, Oslo makes it super easy to collaborate on videos and receive feedback. To add a collaborator, navigate back to the main menu and click on your avatar. You’ll be able to send invites and manage permissions. We have a more in depth article on feedback and revisions if you want to learn more.
Step 5: Export
When you’re ready to export your video, click on the red “Export” button in the top right corner. You have the option to publish directly to YouTube. Don’t worry: the video won’t be public yet. It will export to YouTube as a private video and will stay that way until you go into YouTube and change the settings.
Step 6: Share or Download
Once your video has finished exporting, navigate to the main menu and click on “Exported Videos” on the left side of the screen. Click on the three dots on your video to see a variety of commands. You can share the video, download it directly to your computer, or publish to YouTube if you didn’t select the option from the export screen.
Congratulations, you’ve officially edited your first video with Oslo! We’re willing to bet that not only was the experience much easier than you anticipated, you actually enjoyed it. Now that you know how easy and stress free it is to edit your videos with Oslo, what are you going to make next? We can’t wait to see what you create.
